PRODUCT TRANSPARENCY

Consider us your outsourced sustainability department.

Product Transparency means working within certification programs like LEED, and that requires knowledge and expertise.

It can be a lot. We can help you navigate through all of these programs and their associated processes with ease and peace of mind.

As a building product manufacturer, you are often asked for product transparency documentation as part of specifications and RFPs for green building certification programs like USGBC’s LEED, IWBI’s WELL, and ILFI’s Living Building Challenge (LBC).

These green building certification programs include manufacturer-specific items such as: (link to HPDC, Declare, Product Lens and C2C)

By participating in these product transparency programs, your products will contribute to credits in LEED v4, LEED v4.1, WELL 1.0 and Well 2.0, LBC 4.0 (link to standards) and many more globally. At WAP Sustainability, we help your team comply with these programs and earn maximum contributions in these green building certifications.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)

Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)

The purpose of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is to publicly disclose the environmental impacts of a product including its embodied carbon (EC) number.

EPDs combine the practice of life cycle assessment (LCA) with product transparency. At WAP Sustainability, we help companies create life cycle assessments (LCAs) and develop Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) that help you meet customer requirements.

We provide a turn-key service that helps companies manage LCAs and EPDs affordably.

We are partners with all the major program operators (UL, NSF, SCS, ASTM etc.), have Certified ACLCA Life Cycle Assessment Professionals on staff, and have been approved by the International EPD System (EnvironDec) as Individual and Systems EPD Verifiers.

If you already have existing LCAs and EPDs, WAP Sustainability can help identify ways to reduce the embodied carbon footprint of your products through our Supply Chain LCA Services or help create LEED compliant EPD Action Plans and/or EPD Optimization documents.

Our EPD Services include:Get in touch with us to see how we can help with your Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

Embodied Carbon Reduction

LEED Zero, ILFI Zero Carbon EC3, Buy Clean California Act, AB262, Washington HB 2412, Declare Labels with Embodied Carbon are voluntary or regulatory programs that nudge manufacturers to reduce the Embodied Carbon of their products.

WAP uses a combination of proprietary tools like our Supply Chain LCA Program paired with experience in LCA interpretation to strategize embodied carbon reductions.

WAP Sustainability works with manufacturers to identify the most effective pathways for reducing the embodied carbon of products.

EPD Optimization

LEED Compliant EPD Optimization Documents are used to show life cycle assessment reductions against EPD Baselines, Industry-Wide baselines, or Product to Product Baselines. WAP Sustainability partners with Program Operators, LCA Verifiers and Critical Reviewers to develop EPD Optimization Documents and EPD Optimization Summary Reports that highlight GWP Reductions of 10%, 20% or any percentage for the LEED v4 and v4.1 Building Product Disclosure and Optimization (BPDO) Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) – Option 2 Optimization Credit.

EPD Action Plans

WAP Sustainability can also help Manufacturers create LEED compliant Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Action Plans that interpret LCA results and document strategies of reducing embodied carbon of products in accordance with the LEED v4 and v4.1 Building Product Disclosure and Optimization (BPDO) Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) – Option 2 Optimization Credit.

Health Product Declarations (HPD)

Health Product Declarations (HPD)

Health Product Declarations (HPDs) publicly disclose the substances and ingredients in your final finished products.

WAP Sustainability has been approved by the Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC) as an Approved Third Party Preparer and Approved Third Party Verifier.

While EPDs disclose environmental information, HPDs disclose information related to your products ingredients and potential toxicity.  HPDs screen substances using the GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals which is a transparent, open standard for assessing chemical hazard that supports alternatives assessment for toxics use reduction through identifying chemicals of concern and safer alternatives.

WAP Sustainability is a leader in helping manufacturers collect hard to access material ingredient information from suppliers throughout the supply chain using its Value Chain Chemical Management (VCCM®) System.

We have engaged over 3,500 suppliers to collect material ingredient information and manage transparency relationships with leading chemical producers to enable the rapid sharing of material ingredient data.

The process of an HPD and EPD are similar, the difference is in the output of the results.

Value Chain Chemical Management (VCCM®) System

WAP Sustainability recognizes that HPDs are not the only format of Chemical Transparency reporting a manufacturer may be asked to participate in. Reporting materials and ingredients via Cradle to Cradle Material Health Certificates, Declare Labels, Product LENS are all chemical transparency programs additional to the HPD.

WAP Sustainability has developed a custom Software as a Service (SaaS) called the Value Chain Chemical Management (VCCM®) System to help manufacturers manage these requests.

Our proprietary approach aggregates chemical transparency requirements from over a two-dozen chemical transparency systems into one common reporting framework.

WAP Sustainability assists manufacturers in the collection and management of chemical information from the Supply Chain to support chemical transparency reporting.

The VCCM® system also helps manufactures establish processes and procedures to collect and manage chemical transparency information to support faster chemical transparency reporting to meet market requests.

Chemical Assessments using GreenScreen® for Safer Choice

WAP Sustainability offers suppliers and manufacturers chemical and toxicological assessments using the GreenScreen® for Safer Choice methodology. These GreenScreen Assessments can be used within the Health Product Declaration (HPD) to earn Building Product Disclosure and Optimization, Material Ingredient Reporting, Option 2 Material Ingredient Optimization Credits for Material Ingredient Action Plans, HPDs with 75% GS Assessments, and HPDs with 95% GS Assessments.

WAP Sustainability is a Licensed GreenScreen Profiler who is committed to providing public GreenScreens® to the market.

Our crowdsourced GreenScreen® Assessments are available through ToxNot and Pharos and are changing the way chemical assessments are licensed and shared.

Declare Labels

Declare Labels

Declare Labels publicly disclose critical information about your product using terminology such as Red List Free, Red List Approved, Living Building Challenge (LBC) Compliant or Declared.

Declare Labels require a significant amount of transparent disclosure of substance with little room for proprietary ingredients. Substances are compared to ILFI’s Red List which contains twenty-two classes of chemicals prevalent in the building industry, which ILFI has designated as worst-in-class.

WAP Sustainability can work together with your team on the preparation or third party verification (3PV) of a Declare Label. Manufacturers who need help collecting material ingredient information from suppliers can take advantage of WAP’s Value Chain Chemical Management (VCCM®) System to streamline and manage supply chain material ingredient information.

The process of an HPD and Declare are similar, the difference is in the output and look of the results.
